Scott Eyerly’s Arlington Sons   will be performed four times in the Washington DC area, including at Arlington National Cemetery's Women in Military Service Memorial on September 21 at 2:00 PM. On this occasion, the US Air Force Band will perform the chamber version with piano and cello. All performances will feature Broadway and Metropolitan Opera star David Pittsinger and his son Richard who originally sang the piece as a gifted boy soprano, and now sings baritone. It is most appropriate that a father and son are performing the piece as Arlington Sons   tells the story of a father who brings his young son to Arlington National Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As part of Amherst Glebe Arts Response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ BIG READ, actress and playwright Royal Shiree will premiere   Hurston and Spencer: A Poetic Tale of Two Renaissance Women. Royal’s one-act play focuses of the lives, works, and relationship of Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer and novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, whose masterwork,  Their Eyes Were Watching God  is the subject of THE BIG READ. Royal will perform all roles on the garden stage of the Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum on the afternoon of September 27, the museum's fall open house. Opening on September 12 at Richmond’s Reynolds Gallery is  Likely Places , an exhibition of Isabel Bigelow’s new paintings.  The title refers to Isabel’s habit of repeated visits to locations that have inspired her. While her work is based in nature, she abstracts and distills it, creating pared down, lyrical works featuring one lush hue and one subject: trees, leaves, a fence. Conceived of by the Bronx Artists Collective in celebration of this year's Bronx County Centennial, the Bronx Artist Documentary Project is a collaboration between Bronx photographers and Bronx visual artists in which the former photograph the latter at work in their studios or other Bronx venues.  The BXADP involves over one hundred individuals; it's the aim of the Bronx Artist Documentary Project to increase awareness of the visual artists who work in the Bronx enriching the cultural fabric of the borough. Selin Balci has two solo and one group exhibition this fall. The first solo show will be at Honfleur, Washington DC (September 12-October 31; opening reception on September 12, 6-8 PM). Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY will present Selin’s other solo show, a site-specific installation of a Petri dish world. (November 22-January 4, 2015; artist’s reception on November 22, 5-8 PM.)
