Fellows Selected for 2008 International Exchanges


The jurying work has been completed for the 2008 international exchange residencies and the VCCA artists, writers and composers selected to travel to artist communities abroad are:

Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Ireland:
One poet: Henri Cole, Boston, MA
One composer: Silvia Fomina, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Salzburg Künstlerhaus, Austria:
One visual artist: Brian Bishop, Tuscaloosa, AL

Schloss Plüschow, Germany:
One visual artist: Laura Sharp Wilson, Olympia, WA

St James Centre for Creativity, Malta:
One visual artist: Olive Ayhens, Brooklyn, NY
One writer: Cathryn Hankla, Roanoke, VA

Fellows selected for Moulin à Nef residencies will be announced at the end of the month.

VCCA and Sweet Briar College Enter Long-Range Planning Process

After decades of informal discussions, VCCA and Sweet Briar College have decided to study the various possibilities of a permanent home for VCCA. VCCA has been leasing Mt. San Angelo from Sweet Briar since 1977. Both institutions have agreed to actively pursue a long-term solution to the current annual lease renewals. The timing is mutually beneficial in that VCCA is embarking on a new Strategic Plan, while Sweet Briar is implementing its Plan for Sustainable Excellence. The opportunities to explore include, but are not limited to, the following options: VCCA purchases the Mt. San Angelo property and remains there VCCA and SBC enter into a lease-to-purchase agreement for the Mt. San Angelo property and VCCA remains there VCCA moves to the Sweet Briar College campus VCCA moves to another non-SBC location This is a long-range planning process, one that will take place over the course of several years. In Memorium: Julie Portman

It is with sadness that we report that longtime VCCA Fellow Julie Portman , died Dec. 21 following a long illness. Her husband, songwriter and VCCA Fellow Paul Reisler has organized a celebration of her life to be held Sat., Jan 31 at the Theatre House in Castleton , VA. Friends are asked to RSVP by emailing reserve@chateauville.org or calling 540-937-8969. There will be a 2:30 showing of Julie's play Conference of the Birds and 4:00 concert followed by pot-luck supper & song circle sharing. Julie was an Obie-award winning playwright, actress, director, storyteller, singer, and teacher. In 1986 she founded Ki Theatre in Rappahanock County, Virginia, and was artistic director there for 22 years. Story was always at the center of Julie’s work on stage, television, as a writer and a master teacher.
