The Commission 2014: Call for Submissions

CALL TO VCCA FELLOWS!

We are currently accepting proposals from our Fellows for a site-specific artwork that is visually arresting and conceptually sophisticated. This installation or presentation will be the centerpiece of a fundraising event entitled, simply, The Commission. The work should create or inspire a memorable environment for guests, one that is interactive, theatrical, provocative, or ...

Proposals

VCCA is interested in work that activates or enhances a portion of the site of The Commission through sound, light, objects, music, words, or in some other way - surprise us! The work could be placed in another context with adaptation so it does not need to be strictly site-specific, but it must integrate in some way with the event venue. This will not be a permanent installation. Projects requiring permanent installations will not be considered.

Proposals must consist of a partnership between two or more VCCA Fellows from at least two genres (visual art, film, literature, music, etc.) We would love for guests to be able to depart from The Commission with a small memento from the work, but that is not strictly required.

The Site

The Commission will be held once again at Morven Farm, one of the most beautiful and historic properties in Virginia, now managed by the University of Virginia Foundation. This year, the site will move to a spot near the primary historic house. It's a stunning setting.

To see photos and videos of the venue, visit the Morven Farms website.

Compensation

The commissioned team of artists will receive the following:
  • $3,000 honorarium, which is an all-inclusive remuneration to cover materials, travel, equipment, or other aspects of production as determined by the artists.
  • Residencies at Mt. San Angelo prior to the event to allow for preparation and installation.
  • Invitations to be Guests of Honor at The Commission, in the company of approximately 300 patrons of the arts.
  • Significant publicity of the commissioned work.
Submission Guidelines
  • Detailed written description of proposed work (.doc or .pdf) not to exceed two pages.
  • Drawing (.pdf) or photographs of proposed work, or examples of previous similar works.
  • Suggestions for where the work could be sited or performed. Please visit the event venue on the VCCA website for an idea of your options.
  • Website link(s) showing examples of your previous work.
  • Estimated list of materials showing approximate costs and sourcing (this will not affect the $3,000 compensation amount.)
  • A guarantee that at least one member of the team will be present at the event.
